Interview: Veganism & social perspectives

We didn't miss the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes at Good Travel.

Geraldine Voss, sustainability manager and freelance writer at Good Travel, brings her passions for travel, food and design to Good Travel full-time.

As an expert in sustainable lifestyles, Geraldine has written an article about Veganuary and also answered two exciting questions for us. She gives us an insight into her own journey to veganism and shares experiences from her experiment to live vegan, sugar-free & alcohol-free in January.

Question 1: What is the first sensible step towards a vegan diet for you? What advice would you give readers?

Geraldine Voss: I started giving up meat and cow's milk a few years ago for animal welfare reasons and have gradually eaten less and less animal-based food. However, I can't (yet) give up cheese and honey completely, but I try to buy regional products from species-appropriate husbandry wherever possible. There are certainly different reasons for everyone to change their diet. Health factors and/or climate protection also speak in favor of this step. However, food is often linked to emotions and memories and changing habits simply takes time. But reducing meat and trying out dairy alternatives, for example, is a good start in my opinion.

Question 2: You went vegan, sugar-free and alcohol-free in January. What perspective do you have on these three topics in particular since then?

Geraldine Voss: It was a really exciting experiment and, to be honest, I often reached my personal limits and sometimes "had" to cheat. For me personally, the only thing that was really difficult was giving up sugar and I even dreamt of huge cakes at night. But it was also clear to me from the start that I would continue to eat fructose. When I was invited to a birthday coffee party about two weeks later and made a cake exception, I had a real sugar flash. After that, it wasn't necessarily easier to stay abstinent again. My enormous conditioning to sugar as a "reward" really shocked me. No wonder, though, because if you take a closer look at the ingredients of most products in the supermarket, there is far too much sugar in almost everything. The World Health Organization recommends a maximum of 50 grams of sugar a day for adults, which is equivalent to 500ml of apple juice, for example. Physically, I was doing really well with my "nutrition challenge". However, my mood wasn't always great without sugar, so you might want to warn your partner, friends and colleagues 😉
