Berlin celebrates 35 years since the fall of the Wall - Hold up freedom!
35 years ago, people made history. The Berlin Wall, and with it the SED dictatorship, was brought down. What began as a small movement developed into a powerful demonstration for democratic reforms and basic rights in the GDR in the summer and fall of 1989. But even today, unfortunately, freedom and democracy cannot be taken for granted. They require our joint commitment and our vigilance, every day.
For this reason, the motto for the anniversary year is: Uphold freedom! ✊
"What does freedom mean to you?" This question was posed to people in Berlin and many other places. Thousands wrote, sprayed or stuck their thoughts on signs and posters.
On November 8 and 9, these voices for democracy and freedom will become visible together with replicas of historical banners. A unique open-air installation will mark the former course of the Wall from Invalidenstraße via Checkpoint Charlie to Axel-Springer-Straße. This weekend, the kilometer-long route will be transformed into an impressive course with many exciting events.
