Perfect spots for picnicking in Munich

A bike is useful for this picnic area. Leave the crowds behind you in the southern part of the English Garden and cycle through the northern part past the Hirschau. You almost feel like you're in the countryside here - especially when you come across the flock of sheep that often stop by. Our destination is the banks of the Isar north of the Isar weir. Here, the Isar is fantastically beautiful, it almost looks a bit like Canada. Find a small gravel bay for yourselves and enjoy your picnic. In peace and quiet and still in the city.

Exit directly at St.-Quirin-Platz and you're in the middle of Weißenseepark - a real picnic paradise in Giesing. Wide meadows, plenty of sunshine and enough space for you, your blanket and a cool Paulaner Münchner Hell from your rucksack. While kids romp around you and boules balls clatter, you can just lie there, snack and forget the hustle and bustle of the city for a moment. Dreamlike, isn't it?

Often overlooked between its big siblings English Garden and Olympic Park: the wonderful Luitpoldpark. Located in the middle of Munich's two classic parks, Luitpoldpark is super central and yet not at all overcrowded. There's always a shady spot and table tennis tables for the kind of friend who can't sit still even when picnicking, and a great view over the whole city including the mountain panorama. It's hard to find more relaxed picnic conditions. NICE!

Fasaneriesee is located in the north of Munich - and feels a bit like a short vacation in the city. Between shady spots under old trees, volleyball court vibes and balmy afternoons by the water, the day just glides by. And while the sun glistens and you jump into the lake, your Paulaner Münchner Hell is already waiting ice-cold in your rucksack - ready for the perfect end to the day.

The Monopteros is the perfect stopover for anyone who not only wants to feel the English Garden, but also see it. The small Greek-style circular temple sits high up on the hill - with a view over the meadows and as far as the Munich skyline. The Maximiliansanlagen between Ludwigsbrücke and Max-Joseph-Brücke on the east bank of the Isar are often wrongly regarded as just a commuter section for cyclists. The park is super beautiful, the hilly meadows are usually completely unpopulated, there are plenty of shady spots and if you like, you can dangle your legs over the Isar and have a sundowner there. The Maximiliansanlagen are also very central. So if you get nervous about the crowds on your next Reichenbachbrücken date, just remember what we said and cycle the five minutes further north with your snack.

In the middle of the museum quarter and yet totally relaxed: The meadow by the Alte Pinakothek is a real classic for sun worshippers, art lovers and anyone who just wants to get out for a moment. Between imposing architecture, chilled vibes and well-stocked jute bags, you can read, snack, chat - or just blink in the sun. Add a cool Paulaner Münchner Hell and the end of the working day almost feels like the weekend.

While people push their way around the Olympic Lake and look down en masse from the viewpoint on the Olympic Hill, the meadow between them is usually nice and empty. On the slope towards Ackermannbogen, the Olympic Park appears - almost - natural. There are often lots of flowers in bloom here. There's no other way to put it, it's simply wonderful up here above the city.

Not an insider tip, but so wonderfully varied that it simply has to be on this list: Westpark. There are plenty of sunbathing areas, an official barbecue zone, a beautifully landscaped lake and Asian garden art. Perfect for a relaxing afternoon with a picnic blanket, your favorite people and a cool Paulaner Münchner Hell in your hand.

A classic sundowner spot and the ideal place for spontaneous picnickers. Königsplatz is super central, perfectly connected (U2 Königsplatz) and, with Augustenstraße around the corner, offers the ideal setting for a spontaneous picnic.

Not super central, but practically connected to the streetcar and S-Bahn: the Hirschgarten in the west of Munich on the main line. The park is really spacious and therefore offers room for all Sunday picnickers. As the name suggests, there are actually deer in the Hirschgarten. A nice change in an otherwise animal-free Munich.
