Quarter favorites: Haidhausen

One of our favorite places for a quick coffee on the go is the Coffee Box in Steinstraße. The café resembles a cozy living room and offers a variety of coffees as well as sweet delicacies from different countries. If you want to linger and can't get a seat in front of the café, we recommend walking a few meters further to Wiener Platz with your coffee & co. It's just around the corner.

All good things come in threes, which is why the Morso Café is now also available in Haidhausen, more precisely in Kellerstraße. As in Schwabing, the concept is as follows: there are Italian coffee specialties, croissants and cakes as well as panini or tramezzini. You will also find coffee beans to take home and a small, fine selection of wines and Italian delicacies in the small store. This Morso is a solid caffetteria.

Whether you're a convinced vegan or just like burgers & co. of all kinds - the Vegan Junkhouse Club is a good place for a "hearty" evening either way. In addition to purely vegan junk food of all kinds, you can expect a lot of pink - walls, chairs, sofas, crockery and menu - combined with a large portion of punk attitude.

We can all manage the German translation of this restaurant in Haidhausen, can't we? Yes, "el perro" means "the dog". We don't know the exact story behind it and whether there is one at all. But the tapas here taste really good and that is simply much more important to us at this point. What else we like about El Perro: The authentic Spanish flair in the restaurant with the many tiles on the wall and the dim lighting. And what we can't get enough of: the sweet potato croquettes and the dates wrapped in bacon. Enjoy your meal!

Eating Italian in Haidhausen? Head to Lollo Rosso - whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Because it always tastes really good here. We particularly recommend the large antipasti plate, the pasta aglio & olio and a portion of baby tiramisu. If that's not enough of a sugar rush for you: you can get M&Ms from the gumball machine for 2 cents at Lollo Rosso. Best deal ever!

A stone's throw away from the lively Wörthstraße is Cafébar Fortuna on the quiet corner of Sedanstraße and Metzstraße. When the sun is shining, you can sit on the colorful chairs in front of the café, eat a cake and watch the people go by. The Listino Prezzi, the price list on the wall, gives you an overview of what's on offer. But since you can't read it here, we'll just give you a few recommendations: the quiche creations, the chocolate cake and the panini with goat's cheese and sun-dried tomatoes are particularly delicious here. Also not bad: stop by for the traditional Sunday brunch.

The Neulinger bread and pastry bakery has five branches in Munich. You will find a particularly large and beautiful branch in Wörthstraße. Everything tastes good here, from pretzels to pastries, so we would like to highlight everything that is baked with spelt flour. The Neulinger bakery has specialized in this in recent years. The spelt and pumpkin bread, for example, is very tasty, as are the small spelt and pumpkin rolls. If you visit Neulinger in the afternoon, you can get homemade cakes and small pastries to take away or eat on the seating in front of the bakery. There is also a rather cozy indoor area in case of bad weather.

Sometimes all you need is a really good sandwich or - to put it in North German terms - a sturdy sandwich. The right address for this in Haidhausen is Metzstraße 37, where Julia at Stulle & Stoff serves you the finest sandwiches, changing lunch dishes as well as croissants and cakes. But back to the sandwiches: For fans of hearty cuisine, there are rolls with Leberkäse and pickles, and for those who prefer less traditional Bavarian creations, there's foccacia with wasabi mayo, oyster mushrooms, red cabbage and coriander. Take it outside and enjoy life.

The concept of the Lotti Bar fits Haidhausen about as well as Boazn fits Obergiesing. Because behind the charming bar in Munich's family quarter is a daughter-father business, more precisely that of Lotta and Sebastian Neudecker. Among other things, they serve a delicious selection of colorful bowls at lunchtime, cakes in the afternoon and all kinds of good snacks such as olives and antipasti platters in the evening. What the Lotti Bar is also known for: stable drinks, spritz at any time of day and a wide selection of gin.

In times of brewed coffee trends and acai bowls, it's not always easy for a café to stay true to itself. But it is possible. The best proof: the café in the backyard in beautiful Haidhausen. To get here, you actually have to go into a back courtyard on Sedanstraße. Once there, you'll find a lovely café with colorful furniture, great lamps on the ceiling and a small terrace for nice weather. And it doesn't really matter what time of day you visit the café in the courtyard - whether for breakfast, lunch or a cake craving - there should be something for everyone on the menu. Recommendation for hangovers: Fried potatoes with fried eggs and (optional) bacon.

For fans of clear and timeless design, we recommend a visit to Reibolds. In the concept store on Sedanstraße, you will find ceramics and textiles as well as special small pieces of furniture, delicate jewelry, simple postcards and much more. The store is a great place to discover small labels and hear their stories from owner Constanze.

For gifts for babies, children, parents-to-be or perhaps for your own offspring, it's worth making a detour to Preysingstraße 39. You could find what you're looking for in the newly opened Bazaar Noir. The store, run by the two owners Charin and Heidi, focuses primarily on things for children. And if you get tired of browsing, treat yourself to a fresh coffee by AROMA Kaffeebar - it's also available at Bazaar Noir.

Kokolores - rarely has a name been more fitting for a store. Because what you will find in this small store in Wörthstraße cannot be better described than 'Kokolores': from postcards and children's toys to curious gifts. The best store if you're still looking for a gift idea and just want some inspiration. You'll find everything here - Kokolores.

Shopping for natural cosmetics with good advice and a feel-good atmosphere: this is possible at "TOBS - the organic beauty store" on Wiener Platz. The certified products cover all needs from facial care, hair care and make-up to products especially for men. You can also try out various treatments, which are carried out in the back rooms of the store.

From cosmetics to bigger things: Haidhausen is also a great place to buy racing bikes. Namely at Bici Bavarese. So if you're looking for high-quality racing bike equipment and special collector's items, you'll find what you're looking for here. In addition to new items, Bici Bavarese also offers vintage pieces that have been lovingly refurbished by hand. You can already find some second-hand bikes on the website, but it's also worth stopping by.

MACY on Johannisplatz is a special goldmine for luxury second-hand fashion. Owner Barbara Dockhorn and her team only sell clothes here that are of high quality and in good condition. These often include items of distinction. They are then sorted by color and well looked after until a new, good home is found for them. Maybe with you!

No matter what time of year you visit Wiener Platz, there is always something going on. The square was named after the adjacent Wiener Straße and is the smallest of Munich's four permanent markets for flowers and food (the others are Viktualien-, Elisabeth- and Pasingermarkt). Next door is also one of the largest beer gardens in Munich, the Hofbräukeller. There is a maypole in the center of Wiener Platz, which gives the whole square an even more village-like character. On weekdays, you can linger at the stalls until 18:00, treat yourself to a Spritz or simply take a stroll.

At the end of Wörthstraße in the Franzosenviertel, just before Ostbahnhof, a particularly beautiful, green and flowery spot awaits you: Bordeauxplatz, a green space based on the French model. Its avenue of shady lime trees is a wonderful place to relax, spread out a blanket or (if you're lucky) grab a bench in the sun. If you get hungry, the Neulinger bakery is just a few steps away.

Not far from the Rosenheimer Platz S-Bahn station is Weißenburger Platz. With its large fountain, the "Glaspalastbrunnen", in the middle and the many benches arranged in a circle around it, it is also a fabulous place to linger. At Christmas time there is a lot going on here, because the Haidhausen Christmas market takes place on Weißenburger Platz. And we think it's one of the most beautiful in Munich. In summer, simply swap mulled wine for a glass of Aperol Spritz to go from the Lotti Bar. Cheers!
