A historical look behind the scenes of the legendary "Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf"
In the TMD's permanent exhibition, you have the chance to get to know an epoch-making theater foundation. Meet nine inspiring artists and 42 sometimes unusual objects that tell the story of the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf and its archiving.
Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf (Dumont-Lindemann)
Founded in 1904 by Louise Dumont and Gustav Lindemann, the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf was an extraordinary project. This project was intended to reform the theater around 1900. The actress Dumont, who was in demand throughout Europe, and the theater manager and director Lindemann were dissatisfied with the state of the performing arts. Thanks to the commitment of Düsseldorf industrialists, the Schauspielhaus was built in Düsseldorf and quickly became a milestone in German theater and cultural history.
Hidden traces of life
42 diverse objects are presented in an oversized display case - from a fan to photographs of scenes and stage designs to a teapot. These objects were never intended to be exhibited. They were used in private life or were the basis for theater productions or visits to the theater. They all bear traces of past lives. In combination with nine exemplary companions, these objects bear witness to exciting stories: Of the Schauspielhaus, of Düsseldorf in the early 20th century and of the cultural awakening into modernity. The exhibition also highlights the important contribution made by women to modern art.
