Timo Gross - Red wine and blue tones

The Palatinate guitarist, singer and composer Timo Gross has been a fixture on the German blues scene for over 20 years. His distinctive voice and versatile guitar playing are his trademarks. Even if he occasionally makes excursions into harder rock spheres, the essence of his music is and remains the blues, which is always present like a "blue thread".

Timo Gross is not a purist, but rather a cautious innovator who breathes the blues into pithy rock and vice versa. He does not dwell for long on the question of genre boundaries. He calls it "blues-infused music", if you want to pigeonhole him musically.

After many years as a studio musician, in which he played everything from country to hip hop and pop, he released his first blues album "Down to the Delta" in 2005. It worked and got him 100 gigs in a year. And it encouraged him to keep going. He gained a large fan base both in clubs and at major festivals and released a good dozen records. But after "Heavy Soul", which was released on his own label Grand Cru in 2016, it was time to call it a day.

Speaking of Grand Cru: Timo Gross also sells his own red wine on his website, a 2022 Palatinate Tempranillo called "Black Dawg Bone", which is said to be characterized by "aromas of raspberries, cherries, cassis, but also floral notes such as violets and rose petals". Perhaps he will bring a few bottles with him to the Franconian wine metropolis for his debut in Würzburg.

After an eight-year break from music, during which he devoted himself to composing new songs and producing other artists, he finally returned to the blues scene in 2024 with the album "Black Dawg Bone". The new album was showered with praise from critics and audiences alike.

His songwriting has continued to evolve and many of the songs on the album reflect the big themes of life: love, death, fear and hope. His smoky voice dominates the album and gives it an intense expressiveness. The guitar work is more reduced than on his previous albums, but all the more haunting. It is an authentic album that captures the essence of the blues in a unique way.

Big Daddy Wilson - The gentleman of the blues

When African-American musicians come to Europe, they usually bring the sounds of their homeland with them - soul, jazz, gospel or even the blues. For Big Daddy Wilson from North Carolina, who has lived in Germany for many years, it was the other way around. When he came to Europe as a young man because he couldn't find a job at home, he had no idea about the blues, he says. And yet he has become one of the most popular blues and soul singers in Europe.

At home in the small town of Edenton, he only experienced music in church on Sundays. He only heard his first "real" concert in Germany - it was a blues band. "I met the blues here in Germany. I didn't know what it was until then, but here I found something in the blues that I had been missing all my life," he recalls this discovery. And he found something else here: the love of his life. His wife of many years, Helga, is now also his manager.

He was quickly infected by the blues virus. And he finally found the right music to set the poems he had been writing for a long time to music. This led to the creation of his first songs, which were to be followed by many more.

In the meantime, Wilson has released more than a dozen longplayers and gained a large fan base throughout Europe. The last two are "Hard Time Blues" and "Plan B", which he recorded with his Italian band "The Goosebump Bros.", with whom he will also be performing at the All is Blues Festival. Thanks to countless appearances at concerts and festivals, they have long been a well-rehearsed unit. They move effortlessly between blues, soul, gospel and even a little funk and reggae.

In his live performances, Big Daddy is quite the friendly genleman. Wearing a well-fitting black suit, hat and sunglasses, he celebrates his songs with a warm, sonorous voice, reminiscent of the reverend of an African-American church congregation. Like them, Big Daddy Wilson quickly knows how to win over his audience and have a roaring party with them.
