The Philharmoniker are not just an orchestra in and for Duisburg: in addition to their musical home, the Philharmonie Mercatorhalle, they also offer selected venues throughout the city a platform for various concert formats - but they are also on the road as cultural ambassadors. With the guest performance at their Rhineland neighbors in Cologne, they are also demonstrating their historically grown expertise as an orchestra for new music. The program features a contemporary, the young Portuguese composer Igor C Silva, and the romantic Johannes Brahms, who always seems a little old-fashioned with his beard: both skilfully expand the expressive range of compositional design in their works. Brahms used the technique of developing entire symphonic movements from the smallest motifs, from tiny musical nuclei. In the first movement of his fourth and last symphony, it is even a motif consisting of "only" two notes that becomes the basis of the powerful first movement. In Igor C Silva's oeuvre, acoustic instruments are joined by electronic sounds, which often evoke an almost psychedelic mood in his works. In his new piece, they merge with a jazz quartet and the classical orchestra to create an atmospherically dense sound that opens up a new listening experience.
