Piano Trio in E flat major op. 38 "Grand Trio"
Alexander von Zemlinsky
Clarinet Trio in D minor op. 3
Almost exactly 100 years lie between the two works on the program - and yet they have one thing in common: both trios enjoyed great popularity immediately after their publication. Beethoven's Opus 38 was originally a septet - and in this form was one of his most frequently performed works. This is probably why he later reworked it into a piano trio, the violin part of which can also be played by a clarinet. Alexander von Zemlinsky, on the other hand, had another "role model" for his clarinet trio: his idol Johannes Brahms. And he thanked his colleague kindly for the flowers and lobbied his publisher Simrock to publish it.
