20 000 Hour Band plays Duke Ellington //#PANDAjazz

When we played with Fink Floyd at PANDA Platforma in June, one of the club’s organizers invited us to his birthday party – his 20,000th – which was also taking place at PANDA in December. Rieko and I spontaneously decided to form a Duke Ellington cover band for the occasion. It took us no more than two minutes to decide who would join us in the band – it was that obvious!
A few days later, I realized we had forgotten to come up with a band name. I thought, “Well, it’s just for one gig at a party,” so I decided to call it the “20,000 Hour Band.” But then I wasn’t sure – was it 20,000 or 30,000 hours? Later, I found out it was actually his 20,000th birthDAY! Still, I thought “20,000 Hour Band” sounded better, so I stuck with the better-sounding version.

Als wir im Juni mit Fink Floyd in der PANDA Platforma spielten, lud uns einer der Club-Organisatoren spontan zu seiner Geburtstagsparty ein – seiner 20.000sten – die ebenfalls im Dezember im PANDA stattfinden sollte. Rieko und ich beschlossen kurzerhand, für diesen Anlass eine Duke-Ellington-Coverband zu gründen. Es dauerte keine zwei Minuten, bis wir wussten, wer mitspielen würde – es war einfach völlig klar!
Ein paar Tage später fiel mir auf, dass wir noch keinen Bandnamen hatten. Ich dachte: „Na ja, es ist ja nur ein Auftritt auf einer Party“, und nannte das Ganze einfach „20.000 Hour Band“. Dann war ich mir aber nicht mehr sicher – waren es 20.000 oder 30.000 Stunden? Später stellte sich heraus: Es war tatsächlich sein 20.000ster Geburtstag! Trotzdem fand ich, dass „20.000 Hour Band“ einfach besser klang – also blieb ich dabei.
