3 Faces of Reality
Three positions - three approaches to the portrait - three perspectives on identity and representation.
In this exhibition, master students from the Macketanz class (HfBK Dresden) explore the idea of the portrait - and question what a face actually tells us.
Inspired by a Japanese proverb that says a person has three faces - one that they show to the world
one that he shows to the world,
one that he shows to friends and family,
and one that he shows to no one -
the works of Karim Stonjek, Gila Epshtein and Leo-Constantin Fischer shed light on different levels of visibility, identity and staging.
Gila Epshtein devotes herself to portraits of everyday objects. Without a face, they stand for the seemingly trivial - the invisible in the visible. Her works tell of presence in absence and how things can develop their own language.
Karim Stonjek shows masks - as portraits of emotions that form a face without revealing it. His works move between revelation and concealment, between expression and protection. The mask becomes the actual portrait - honest precisely because of its ambiguity.
Leo-Constantin Fischer works with staged figures whose faces are partially veiled or covered. Reality and fiction become blurred in his works. Who is portrayed here - and who remains hidden? The question of authenticity and self-dramatization is a common thread running through his visual worlds.
3 Faces of Reality is an invitation to rethink the portrait as a form of expression - not just as an image of a face, but as a multi-layered narrative about what we show, what we hide and what we ourselves may not know.
