The critic Pierre Lalo issued a blunt warning after the premiere of the piano concerto: With purely instrumental music, the young composer ran the risk of falling onto the wrong track, where he would not be able to exploit his true talents. His true destiny and a happy, even glorious future lay in scenic and material development.
