31. Jazztage Dortmund: Shuteen Erdenebaatar Quartett

Although pianist and composer Shuteen Erdenebaatar's quartet has a standard jazz line-up (piano, bass, saxophone and drums), Erdenebaatar manages to give this format a fresh, modern coloration that is all her own. Her unmistakable sound can be recognized by the energetic freedom and dynamic unity with which she leads her band. She constantly encourages them to harmonize individually and as a group with instinctive free improvisation and expressive interaction, leading them to a sophistication of interplay not expected for their youthful age. The quartet is carried by the young but top-class Munich bassist Nils Kugelmann and driven by the powerful but sensitive drumming of Valentin Renner. The melodically and rhythmically sophisticated inventions of the multi-award-winning saxophonist and recorder player Jakob Manz complete the sound alongside Erdenebaatar's very personal and engaging piano playing.

The quartet won 1st prize and the audience award at the legendary Young Munich Jazz Award 2022 and 2nd prize at the 7 Virtual Jazz Club Global Contest. The quartet's debut album "RISING SUN" was released on September 15, 2023 on the New York-based, multiple GRAMMY®-winning label Motéma Music.
