37TH STUTTGART FILMWINTER
FESTIVAL FOR EXPANDED MEDIA
17.1.-23.1.2024
Festival motto
Be water, my friend
The aura of the festival and the supporting program are determined by this year's motto "Be water, my friend" - a quote from martial arts superstar Bruce Lee: We are focusing on the element of water as a figure of thought, as a form of connection for the cracks in our society. Because climate change, war, capitalism, fascism and patriarchal forms of society are the cracks that are causing the earth, which has been dried out by drought, to burst. Only with a paradigm shift in thought and action will we be able to fill the cracks. We see the film winter as a place for the exchange and presentation of prototypes of new images of society.
Be water, my friend. We follow the call "Making Kin" - "Make yourselves related" - by the philosopher of science Donna Haraway and ask: What new forms of friendship do we need? How can we make ourselves related to all living beings, things, technologies and dissolve outdated dualisms and encrusted ideas, reuniting the rifts that have arisen?
Be water, my friend. To this end, we turn to Astrida Neimanis' hydrofeminist philosophy and understand our festival and the supporting program as "Bodies of Water" - the title of her book - as the connecting element of water. In this sense, our festival should be a condensate from the sea of forms of connection that we create and explore with the artists, curators, cooperation partners and audience, a fresh rain whose water flows invigoratingly through the venues and washes around our audience.
"I only want to see you bathing in the purple rain", sang Prince 30 years ago. We extend the wish with the closing words of the writer Kim de l'Horizon from his article Männlichkeit, Krieg und ganz viel Liebe (TAZ 31.12.2022): "Viel purple rain to you".
