4th symphony concert
MAURICE RAVEL (1875-1937): La Valse
IGOR STRAVINSKY (1882-1971): Violin Concerto in D
SERGEI RACHMANINOV (1873-1943): Symphonic Dances op. 45
"Stravinsky said that this is a piece that should reek of violin," the former concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker Kolja Blacher once remarked about Stravinsky's Violin Concerto. "That means: it has a lot of effects and affects that he exaggerates - things that you really have to play with a lot of sarcasm to show the ambiguity. It's also simply there to show what kind of fingers and what kind of bow you have."
Ravel's "Apotheosis of the Viennese Waltz" and Rachmaninov's work, from which the theme music for the television program Quarks originates, complete this program.
