The Schwule Filmwoche Freiburg (SFF) is the oldest continuous queer film festival in the German-speaking world. It has been held every year without interruption since 1985 and usually starts at the beginning of May. Alongside the CSD Freiburg, the SFF is one of the highlights of queer life in the university city.
The SFF shows queer films from all over the world - no longer with a purely gay focus. Foreign-language films are usually shown in the original version with German subtitles, rarely with English subtitles. Individual films are shown in German dubbed versions.
In addition, there are one or two lovingly compiled short film programs, exhibitions, parties and various special events every year, such as the OpenAir Special in summer or the Christmas Special with home-baked cookies and mulled wine.
The SFF maintains good contacts with other queer associations and organizations. Over the years, this has resulted in many wonderful events and collaborations, e.g. with the Freiburg Lesbian Film Festival, Rosa Hilfe Freiburg, Checkpoint Aidshilfe Freiburg, QueerAmnesty, TransAll, Rosekids and Bunte Jugend.
The SFF is run entirely by volunteers. They view a large number of films in advance and put together the program for the film week with a lot of love and discussion.
The SFF is financed by institutional funding from the Cultural Office of the City of Freiburg im Breisgau, as well as from sponsors, entrance fees and donations. We also receive partial funding from the federal government via Queerscope e.V. on an application basis.
