5th symphony concert
DMITRI SCHOSTAKOWITSCH (1906-1975) on the occasion of his 120th BIRTHDAY:
"The Gadfly Suite" op. 97a (compiled by Levon Atovmyan from the music to the film of the same name by Alexander Faintsimmer)
Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major op. 102
Symphony No. 6 in B minor op. 54
We want to celebrate the composer in his anniversary year with three very different works. In the 1920s, Shostakovich earned his living as a pianist in silent movie theaters - an experience that led to 40 film scores. Contrary to his own opinion of his 2nd Piano Concerto, which contained "no artistic achievements worth preserving", it became one of his most popular works. The 6th Symphony was originally intended to be a large-scale Lenin Symphony, but Shostakovich changed his plans in 1937/38: "My latest symphony is dominated by music of a pensive and lyrical order. I wanted to convey this in the moods of spring, joy and youth."
