Works by Bohuslav Martinů, Dmitri Shostakovich and Sergei Rachmaninov

Honest expression of the deep, human inner life unites the musical works of this concert. They promise a journey into the soul worlds of 20th century composers, which they reveal and allow us to empathize with through their expressive sounds. Dmitri Shostakovich's 1st Cello Concerto seems like a great emotional relief after decades of strict art censorship by Josef Stalin's regime. Sergei Rachmaninov's indulgent 3rd Symphony, which reveals much of the Russian composer's homesickness, was written in exile in America. Bohuslav Martinů's opera Julietta is about a lost connection to reality; the accompanying orchestral suite depicts wandering in endless dream worlds.
