The Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival transforms Hamburg into a sea of pink blossoms every year. With spectacular cherry blossom fireworks, the election of the Cherry Blossom Queen and a colorful Japanese festival, the city celebrates its close connection to Japanese culture.

A gift from the Japanese community

Since the 1960s, hundreds of Japanese cherry trees have adorned the Hanseatic city - a gift from the Japanese community as a sign of friendship. The Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival was created to celebrate this special connection. Every year, thousands of visitors come to the Alster to admire the impressive blossoms and spectacular fireworks.

A festival with many highlights

The Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival includes several events that make spring in Hamburg unforgettable:

• Cherry blossom fireworks: the highlight of the festival! On May 23, 2025, the fireworks will light up the sky over the Outer Alster at 10:30 pm.
• Election of the Hamburg Cherry Blossom Queen: On May 24, 2025, the German-Japanese Society of Hamburg will elect a new representative of the festival.
• Japan Festival: On 25 May 2025, a colourful cultural festival will take place, organized by the Consulate General of Japan and the German-Japanese Society.
