A LONDONI FÉRFI The Man from London Béla Tarr, Ágnes Hranitzky Hungary/F/Germany 2007 35 mm French and English original language 132'
Slowly, places are assembled from surfaces, reflections, shadows and cones of light: a ship's deck, a quay wall, a train, a lighthouse. The cool, sharply contrasted no man's land, observed with the utmost precision, is the setting for Tarr's Simenon adaptation: a noiresque "crime thriller" about the switchman Maloin, who observes a murder from a lighthouse. A suitcase of money that has fallen into the water opens up a momentary escape from his meagre existence. Immersed in boundless blackness, A LONDONI FÉRFI is the inside view of a frozen life.
