A Real Pain - Kommunnales Kino (Koki)

David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) are cousins and, as Jews living in the United States, want to find out more about their roots. Their roots are in Poland, where their recently deceased grandmother survived the Holocaust. The two join a small tour group on a trip to sites of Jewish life in Poland. However, the two men could hardly be more different. The dutiful, self-controlled David is very keen to have as much structure as possible in his life, whereas the spontaneous free spirit Benji, who is mourning his grandmother, wears his heart on his sleeve and is hopelessly impulsive. His almost manic-depressive sociability soon presents the travel group with challenges that are by turns hilarious, turbulent and embarrassing. Later, during a visit to the Majdanek extermination camp, a breathtaking silence suddenly returns to the film as the camera captures the reactions of the travelers inside an incinerator. The deep pain of the film's title has both a historical and a private dimension.
