Àbáse is a band project led by keyboardist and producer Bognár Szabolcs. The word "àbáse" comes from the West African Yoruba language and stands for cooperation: for collective efforts, collaborations and a communal vibe. As the brainchild behind this project, Bognár Szabolcs brings artists together to collaboratively create a sound that combines traditional West African and Afro-Brazilian music with jazz, hip-hop and club culture.
Àbáse's second album, "Awakening", was released this year. Recorded in four days at Berlin's Brewery Studios with an ensemble of close collaborators, the album combines Àbáse's diverse musical influences and reference points (classical Lagos Afrobeat, traditional Hungarian folklore, Yoruba rhythms, house and techno, hip-hop and much more) with the exquisite modal improvisation inspired by Szabi's introspection.
Having already been supported by BBC Radio 6 Music's Gilles Peterson, Soulection, Okayplayer, Worldwide FM, Stamp The Wax, Earmilk, Complex and KEXP, Àbáse released his long-awaited debut EP "Invocation" via HHV Records and Cosmic Compositions in 2019 and the "Body Mind Spirit" EP, a collaborative electronic exploration with drummer/producer Ziggy Zeitgeist, in early 2021. In late 2021, the acclaimed debut album "Laroyê" was released, recorded entirely during a five-month trip to Brazil, earning the project worldwide recognition.
A trained keyboardist, Bognár has been active in Budapest's eclectic music scene for many years. He has led several successful acts, including Solqlap Budapest and The Mabon Dawud Republic, a fourteen-piece Afrobeat orchestra that organized Felabration Budapest and performed with artists such as Dele Sosimi and Pat Thomas. After spending time in Paris, Lyon, New York, Accra, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, Bognár now lives in Berlin where, in addition to his solo career, he also works as a keyboardist for Nigerian soul singer Wayne Snow, the local collective Sonic Interventions and Australian jazz drummer Ziggy Zeitgeist's Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange. His involvement in the international music scene has led to studio or stage collaborations with artists as diverse as Immanuel Wilkins, Elzhi, Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, Etuk Ubong, Moses Yoofee, Petter Eldh and Patti Smith.
