Trump's government is destroying the global order and democracy in the USA. What is behind this and how can the EU respond? Before the event, there will be help with switching to digital reading.

After 80 years, the Trump administration is saying goodbye to transatlantic cooperation and only knows enemies - unless you submit to its political dictates. Trump is introducing new tariffs, endangering the global economy, forcing absurd peace negotiations and humiliating Ukrainian President Zelensky.

There can no longer be any talk of democratic processes in Washington, the Trump administration laughs at court rulings and restricts freedom of expression. Universities are facing cuts and the first representatives of the intellectual elite are leaving the country.

In collaboration with Elon Musk, an unelected, radically anti-democratic billionaire, the government apparatus is being dismantled and tens of thousands of civil servants have already lost their jobs.

What are the core ideological pillars of this policy and why do so many European governments still not seem to have understood them? How should Germany, how should the European Union behave towards the USA? And is there still hope for the USA without Trump?

🐾 Laura von Daniels heads the America research group at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. Her research focuses on US economic policy, domestic conditions of US foreign economic policy, US monetary policy, trade agreements, financial market crises and state bankruptcies.

🐾 Katharina Nocun is a publicist. She studied political science and economics in Münster and Hamburg. In her work, she focuses primarily on the tensions between digitalization and democracy. Her first book "Die Daten, die ich rief" (2018; tr: The Data I Called) deals with the topic of digitalization and democracy. This was followed in 2020 by the bestseller "Fake Facts - Wie Verschwörungstheorien unser Denken bestimmen" (together with Pia Lamberty). In 2021, "True Facts - what really helps against conspiracy narratives" was published.

🐾 Bernd Pickert has been a member of the taz foreign desk since 1994. He specializes in the USA, Latin America and human rights. From 2000 to 2012 he was a member of the board of the taz cooperative, and since July 2023 he has been part of the moderation team of the taz podcast Bundestalk.

🐾 Barbara Junge is one of the two editors-in-chief of taz. She is the initiator of the taz climate offensive and the taz climate hub. She was previously the US correspondent for the Tagesspiegel in Washington.
