African Book Festival

In the organizer's words:

Under this year's motto "In Other Wor(l)ds", the African Book Festival once again invites you to discover diverse literary voices from the African continent and the diaspora. The festival creates inspiring spaces for exchange, new texts and surprising perspectives - this year with a special focus on speculative fiction, fantasy and alternative realities. The exciting program is curated by the author and spoken word artist Ivana Akotowaa Ofori from Ghana.

For the festive kick-off on Friday, July 18 at 19:00 , you can expect the staged reading "The Year of Return", based on Ofori's debut novella. Staged by Moses Leo, the text will be brought to life with a specially composed soundscape and an ensemble of Bea Masala, Edith Saldanha and Vanessa Yeboah - a poetic and intense start to the festival weekend.

On Saturday morning, the popular format "Welcome to Other Worlds - Book Speed Dating" invites you to join in. In short conversations, you can get to know the invited authors personally - an entertaining and direct introduction to the festival, moderated by Kevin Mwachiro and Edwige Dro.

You can also look forward to many other events on African science fiction, queer perspectives, feminist voices, mythology and the role of the diaspora. On the festival grounds around the Alte Münze, a marketplace with street food, books, handicrafts and accessories invites you to linger.

A separate ticket is available. The Poetry Night on Saturday evening is included in the Festival Pass and Day Pass Saturday, but can also be attended separately. The Festival Pass includes a day ticket for Saturday including Poetry Night and Sunday. The opening event on Friday evening is not included.
