Ägypten – Land der Unsterblichkeit

In the organizer's words:

About the exhibition

The fascinating realm of the pharaohs can be admired at the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen in the Museum Weltkulturen. With the collection focus on Ancient Egypt and the exhibition "Egypt - Land of Immortality", the rem has been captivating numerous visitors for several years. More than 4000 years of advanced civilization on the Nile are waiting to be discovered. The focus is on everyday life, the position of the pharaoh and his state of officials, the elaborate cult of the dead and the widely ramified world of gods. The presentation spans from the beginnings in the 4th millennium BC through the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms, the Ptolemaic-Roman era to Late Antiquity, which ended in the 7th century AD.

About the collection

The beginnings of the Mannheim collection of Aegyptiaca date back to the early 18th century and the court of the Palatine Electors, although the eventful history of the collection has been repeatedly marked by hard times and numerous objects were lost, not only during the Second World War. For the exhibition "Egypt - Land of Immortality", rem has therefore joined forces with the Roemer-Pelizaeus Museum in Hildesheim as a permanent cooperation partner. Since 2014, numerous loans from Hildesheim have enriched the exhibition, including very special highlights and numerous finds from Giza. At the end of 2016, the Doetsch-Amberger Collection from the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne also came to Mannheim on permanent loan. These can also be admired in the current collection presentation.
