Albert Camus’ Der Fremde. Ein Musiktheaterprojekt [Lecture/Artist Talk]

In their music theater project The Stranger, Elnaz Seyedi, Ehsan Khatibi and Johannes Abel create an artistic synthesis that takes up the core themes of Albert Camus' work of the same name. Their music theater is expected to premiere at the Nationaltheater Mannheim in April 2025.
The artists emphasize three central motifs that permeate Camus' work: death, separation and light. They take the compositional material, including the precisely described sounds and lighting conditions, directly from the novel and thus establish a direct connection to the literary source. In doing so, they thematize the reversal of the classical motif of light as a path to knowledge. Death appears in different guises: the death of the mother and the funeral at the beginning of the novel, the murder scene and the execution of the protagonist. The artists take this threefold manifestation and structure it into three scenes. Separation is reflected on various levels and, together with the light, forms the basic motif of the stage design.
