Prabha and Anu work in a hospital in Mumbai and share an apartment. Prabha entered into an arranged marriage many years ago, but her husband emigrated to Germany shortly after the wedding and is hardly ever heard from again. So young Anu lives with her, who is still full of dreams for her future and has a secret relationship with a Muslim boy. When a rice stove suddenly arrives in the post - possibly from Germany - the two women's world is turned upside down. On a trip to the seaside with Prabha's friend Parvati, the women discover a place on the beach that could make their secret longings come true...
With wonderful shots against the dazzling backdrop of Mumbai at night and a haunting soundscape, Payal Kapadia creates a beguiling, dreamy and poetic film in her first feature film and makes history in the process: In Cannes, she was the first Indian woman to be awarded the Grand Jury Prize.
