Clara has made it. Away from the East German provinces, she leads an independent life as a lecturer in Berlin and completes her doctorate in philosophy. There she comes to terms with her professional ambitions, the demanding friendship with her doctoral mother and an affair. When Clara travels back to her old home with her teenage daughter Emma for her mother's 60th birthday, she is confronted with her ideal of a free, self-determined life.

With pointed dialog and precise interpersonal observations, director Annika Pinske uses her own experience to tell the story of an upwardly mobile woman from the provinces and the lifelong balancing act between (educated) middle-class life and the village pub.
