A man tries to jump onto a departing train at the last moment and has an accident. Cut: The scene is a film set where the director has doubled the absent actor. The team waits in vain for him to appear, goes in search of him and learns of his accidental death from the radio. The news plunges director Andrzej into a crisis. How is he supposed to finish the movie?
EVERYTHING FOR SALE is one of Wajda's most personal films. He made it in 1968 as a tribute to the actor and friend Zbigniew Cybulski, the youth idol of Polish cinema with whom he had made three films since 1954, who had died in a similar accident the previous year.
The multi-layered narrative is not only a self-reflection and determination of Wajda's position, but also deals on several levels with the complicated questions about the nature and meaning of human happiness.
