Book bans and censorship? That no longer exists ... or does it? A look at the USA shows: In the 2023/24 school year alone, around 4,000 books were challenged or banned approximately 10,000 times (source: PEN America). But which books are affected? Who is calling for censorship and by what means? What role do libraries play and how do librarians react?

To explore these questions, we are showing the documentary "America's Book War". The film from the year 2024 by director Ilan Ziv sheds light on the political background of the censorship movement in American schools and public libraries.

We will then take up the film's themes through local references and discuss with experts what this new fear of words means for our society and how it can be illustrated. The guests are:

  • Anna Seethaler, curator of the exhibition "Forbidden Books" (2023) at the Literaturhaus München
  • Katrin Hörnlein, Head of Young Readers at DIE ZEIT and editor of ZEIT LEO
  • Dr. Arne Ackermann, Director of the Munich City Library
