AMPHITRYON - by Heinrich von Kleist

The great general Amphitryon is at war against the Athenians. His wife Alkmene is eagerly awaiting his return in Thebes. She is also said to have devoted herself to idolatry, which does not please the supreme chief of the gods - Jupiter. To take revenge on Alkmene, Jupiter has the following plan: he comes down to earth in the form of Amphitryon and spends a night of love with his wife Alkmene. She is unaware of the deception that night, but when the real Amphitryon returns the next day and she tells him about their supposed night together, things get mixed up... And Charis, Alkmene's maid, also has her difficulties with her returned husband Sosias, Amphitryon's servant, with whom Mercury also plays a trick...
