Annie & The Caldwells

A remarkable story: in 1975, the US soul and gospel band The Staples Jr. Singers recorded their only album "When Do We Get Paid". Almost 40 years later, David Byrne (Talking Heads) discovers the record and re-releases it. Together with singer Annie Caldwell and her family, a new chapter emerges - the band's debut album - released in March 2025 on Byrne's label Luaka Bop. "My family is my band", says Annie Caldwell, who is accompanied by her daughters on backing vocals on "Can't Lose My (Soul)". Together with her husband Joe on lead guitar and her two sons on drums and bass, she gives disco soul its own powerful drive - a harmonious mix of spiritually influenced gospel and secular funk aesthetics à la Chaka Khan or Bootsy Collins. A look back that tells us a lot about the musical future - in the spirit of Enjoy Jazz.
