Madrid Before Hanita - 300 Jews from Palestine against Franco
Israel 2006, dir.: E. Torbiner, 58 min., documentary
The Spanish Civil War began in July 1936 with a military coup led by General Franco. From August 1936, around 35,000 to 40,000 international volunteers fought against the putschists, including around 300 Jewish volunteers from the British Mandate of Palestine. Mostly Communists, they joined the International Brigades. In Palestine, they encountered resistance from the Zionist community, which prioritized the establishment of a Jewish state. Eran Torbiner's film sheds light on the fate of these fighters and offers a moving picture of Jewish involvement in Spain in 1937/38 through eyewitness accounts, historical film clips, documents and letters.
