Artists as Independent Publishers

In the organizer's words:

Artists As Independent Publishers (AAIP) presents around 100 artists' books that were developed and produced by students at five international art academies as part of an interdisciplinary teaching and exhibition project on artistic publishing.

The international cooperation project initiated by the University of the Arts Bremen invites students from different universities to explore artists' books as an independent artistic practice every year. The project aims to question not only the production of artists' books, but also the motivation and different ways of publishing them.

In 2024, students from the BURG and participants from the University of the Arts Bremen, the University of Applied Arts Vienna, the St. Lucas School of Arts Antwerp and the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences took part in the project.

The resulting artists' books reflect the diversity of contemporary forms of publication and invite a critical examination of current topics and artistic approaches. Last year, the works were shown in a traveling exhibition at the Weserburg Museum in Bremen and the Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (mumok). In April 2025, the exhibition will now be on display at the BURG University Library in Halle.
