Artists in Residency-Programm @ ligeti zentrum: Interweaving Borderlands

In the organizer's words:

The artists Jere Ikongio and Moisés Horta Valenzuela spent six weeks at ligeti zentrum as part of the "Artists in Residency Program" and worked on individual projects. In Interweaving Boderlands they each present the results of their residency.

Moisés Horta Valenzuela - At the Edge of Chaos
Exploring latent space through AI sound synthesis and Impulse Pattern Formulation

The artistic research project "At the Edge of Chaos" reflects the instabilities of our time with the help of generative artificial intelligence and chaotic systems. How do systems maintain their functionality, how do they adapt to disturbances? The sound manifests a reflection of our collective experience in times of climate change, political polarization and economic uncertainty. The shift between order and disorder invites reflection and raises questions about resilience strategies.

As part of Interweaving Borderlands, Moisés Horta Valenzuela presents a spatial audio sound performance that demonstrates how mathematical systems can create rich, dynamic soundscapes at the edge of chaos that reflect our complex relationship to stability and uncertainty. He worked with the IPF, which is used by Simon Linke at the ligeti center.

Jere Ikongio - Sonic Fabrics: Lagos to Hamburg Networks
An interactive generative audio-visual archive

Dutch Wax Fabric or Kanga is the name given to the colorful cotton fabrics that are still used to make clothing in West African countries today. In the late 16th century, the textile dyeing process "batik", which originally came from Indonesia, arrived in Europe. The traditional patterns were copied, industrially reproduced and finally exported from the Netherlands, particularly to the Gold Coast (today's Ghana) and Benin (today's Nigeria). Hamburg also played an important role here: around 1880, almost a third of all overseas trade to West Africa was handled in Hamburg and the Hamburg-based company Bödecker & Meyer also designed fabric patterns for export.

Sonic Fabrics: Lagos to Hamburg Networks is a multi-layered exploration of the sonic, visual and cultural intersections between Lagos, Nigeria and Hamburg. Using the record-o-mat (developed by Joana Welteke and Nadja Rix), the immersive soundscape and participatory installation combines field recordings, archival narratives and generative audio processes. The project explores shared histories, specifically the colonial-era Dutch Wax Fabric trade, urban infrastructures and bodies of water, while reinterpreting these connections through the lens of sonic rhythms, urban organized chaos and collaborative storytelling. The project highlights the influence and reach of colonialism and the lasting effects of this influence through inevitable socio-cultural exchange. As part of Interweaving Borderlands, the project will be presented as a performance-lecture.
