Astraglossa are the guitarists Raissa Mehner and Scott Fields. Both have studied in the classical and jazz tradition and have extensive experience in other genres. Pop, noise, new music, free improvisation and blues find their way into the compositions that the duo performs. These works range from meticulous phase compositions with similarities to the works of Philip Glass or Steve Reich to modular constructions, head tunes and conceptual structures. Composition and improvisation are mixed in all pieces.
Fields is an American. He was born and raised in the South Side of Chicago, where he developed in the neighborhood's free jazz scene. Mehner is German. She studied jazz guitar, classical guitar and composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne and at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. The musicians have performed at various events and festivals in the United States, Europe and Japan.
