On May 8 and 9, the German Department at Leibniz University is hosting the conference "50 Years of Hans Mayer: Outsiders:inside" at the Literaturhaus Hannover. Hans, uh, who ...? Yes, you have to know him here. Mayer, one of the most important Germanists of the last century, not only founded the local German Seminar in 1965, but his famous "Literary Colloquia" also brought prominent writers to the city: Lenz, Johnson, Grass etc.Outsiders is considered Mayer's magnum opus and was published 50 years ago. In the foreword to the new edition ofOutsiders in 2007, Doron Rabinovici calls it a "basic book of our civilization"; the Israeli-Austrian writer considers it more topical than ever due to its themes of Jew-hatred, anti-Zionism, misogyny and homophobia. Rabonivici will be in conversation with German scholar Liliane Weissberg (University of Pennsylvania); literary scholar AlexanderKošenina (Leibniz Universität Hannover) will moderate.
