The virtual exhibition sheds light on the history of Black people in Germany from the perspective of Black people. It follows the life stages of the Diek family since Mandenga Diek's journey from Cameroon to Germany in 1891.
The exhibition is based on the research of historians and activists Katharina Oguntoye and May Ayim, which was published in 1986 in the book "Farbe bekennen. Afro-German women on the trail of their history". New research complements this research. This exhibition offers a deep insight into over 100 years of history of black people in Germany and addresses discrimination, exclusion, activism and the struggle for self-determination.
Thanks to the cooperation of the descendants of Mandenga Diek, Abenaa and Roy Adomako, as well as Marion and Detlef Reiprich, the curation team, Kollektiv >>Kaboom<<, was able to access private photo albums and previously unknown information. The exhibition took place from January to October 2023 at the Schöneberg Museum in Berlin.
Abenaa Adomako, the great-granddaughter of Mandenga Diek, will guide visitors through the virtual exhibition. This will be followed by a moderated public discussion with representatives of Black German Arts and Culture e.V.
Born in Berlin in 1962, Abenaa Adomako is one of the co-founders of the Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland and works as a project assistant in the international programs department at Brot für die Welt, EWDE e.V. She has spent time abroad in France, England and Ghana. As an activist, she is committed to the rights of Black people in Germany and to documenting their experiences. As a contemporary witness, she was a protagonist in the ARD documentary "Schwarz und deutsch. Geschichte der Afrodeutschen" and conceived the exhibition "Auf den Spuren der Familie Diek. Stories of Black People in Tempelhof-Schöneberg".
