Program:
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in E flat major op. 55 "Eroica"
Luigi Cherubini: Requiem in C minor
When the church of St. Vitus in Löningen was built between 1809 and 1813 as the largest pillarless hall church in Germany to this day, the region was part of the Confederation of the Rhine under the protectorate of Napoleon Bonaparte. And to whom did Ludwig van Beethoven originally dedicate his groundbreaking "Eroica" symphony? Exactly, Napoleon! But after he proclaimed himself emperor in Paris in 1804, the composer withdrew this dedication. Beethoven himself considered Luigi Cherubini to be the greatest living composer. His Requiem in C minor, composed in 1816 to mark the 23rd anniversary of the execution of the French King Louis XVI, was also performed at Beethoven's funeral. The Belgian conductor Philippe Herreweghe, winner of the 2021 Musikfest prize, knows better than almost anyone how to combine vocal and instrumental voices into an organic whole. When he now scrapes a thick layer of varnish from these two masterpieces and, with his refreshing approach, brings out unexpected details that have never been heard before, it will be exciting once again!
