Program:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony No. 20 in D major KV 133
Dmitri Shostakovich: Violoncello Concerto No. 1 in E flat major op. 107
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 in E minor op. 64
Founded in 1997, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO) has become an integral part of the international music scene. Its chamber music approach - listening to and reacting to each other - was shaped by its founding father Claudio Abbado. With its precise, animated and technically masterful ensemble playing, it is the ideal partner for Anastasia Kobekina. In her acclaimed Musikfest debut last year, the cellist impressed with her precision, richness of color and clear phrasing. This suits Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1, which the composer wrote for none other than Mstislav Rostropovich. Tchaikovsky himself was dissatisfied with his Fifth Symphony, written in 1888, but wrongly so! The effective symphony with its immortal melodies quickly established itself after its premiere and is still one of his most popular works today. And with his third appearance at this year's festival, Maxim Emelyanychev once again guarantees dynamic and exciting interpretations.
