Two young graduates of the Folkwang School of Design in Essen visit Leipzig in the fall of 1972: Timm Rautert has been familiar with the city since childhood, for Ute Eskilden it is her first visit to the GDR. Together they roamed the socialist metropolis with their cameras, developing an eye for the juxtaposition of modernity and crumbling buildings and for the peculiar stillness of even lively places.
The original plan to publish the photo series in book form has only now been realized. After more than fifty years, the sharpness of observation and melancholy of these photographs come into their own, and they are likely to attract particular interest in Leipzig.
