Why do we care for others at all? The title-giving assumption that it does me good when my neighbors are doing well may provide an initial answer, but it also raises new questions. To what extent does the reciprocity it claims apply? Who is close to us and why - and should we make our care dependent on this?
The spring exhibition introduces the 2025 annual program "HANDLE (with) CARE" with a focus on the ambivalences and overlooked aspects of care culture. The exhibition looks at care practices in which the inclusion and exclusion of people are interdependent - or those that restrict rather than support. Last but not least, it also addresses the question of what this means for curatorial work in a communal gallery such as the Bärenzwinger itself.
A special understanding of care is already inscribed in the architecture of the former animal enclosure. The exhibiting artists Edna Al-Najar, Belia Zanna Geetha Brückner, Ece Cangüden and Elvis Osmanović explore different forms and dimensions of neighborhood and care by engaging with these site-specific conditions of the Bärenzwinger. They use a wide range of artistic forms of expression, from expansive installations to paintings and photographs.
The exhibition is framed by a varied accompanying program that includes workshops, artist talks, performances, an exhibition tour, a neighborhood meeting and a discourse format. The finissage will take place as part of the Gallery Weekend (May 4, 2025).
