In addition to his work as a freelance artist, Thomas Grandi has been teaching German as a second language in integration courses in Berlin Neukölln for around ten years. Many of his students have had limited access to education. This is reflected in fundamental difficulties with reading and writing.

In the field of tension between language teaching and artistic practice, Grandi has developed his own form of visual didactics. He uses his drawing skills in the classroom to illustrate content such as vocabulary or nouns.

The drawings are created in exchange with the learners - as a direct reaction to comprehension difficulties, questions or everyday situations.

↘ Grandi has been photographing the blackboard drawings before erasing them since 2013. In recent months, he has digitally traced a selection of these sketches and processed them into new image compositions.

↘ In the "disPlaceStation" exhibition in the WerkStadt art space, he is showing these works in various media formats.
