If newcomer bac (/biː eɪ 'siː/) had to describe his pop-rap melange in three words, he would choose "unconventional, fresh, simple". Fortunately, he doesn't have to, because his debut EP Sometimes Like This, Sometimes Like That (release date: 29.11.2024) demonstrates the creativity, charisma and nonchalance of this up-and-coming artist without any standardized interview questions. It's not surprising that bac's music has already won over more than a million people on Spotify.

Samuel Bach aka. bac was born in Ethiopia in 2005 and grew up with his German adoptive parents in Villach, an idyllic small town in Carinthia, Austria. At home, he listens to Michael Jackson, learns the piano and plays soccer - there's not much else in Villach. At school, someone listens to German rap on the AirPods - and Samuel is hooked. "The first song I taught myself on the piano was Brot Brechen," he says, "by Shindy and Bushido."

Samuel wrote his first song lyrics at the age of 14. His parents set the ball rolling, albeit unintentionally. One day, when the screen time limit is reached, they have had enough and take Samuel's cell phone away. The teenager is left with nothing but a pen, a sheet of paper and his melodies. He kept at it and released his first tracks on trap beats two years later. It takes another two years for bac to redefine himself, his sound and his goals with the single Bald Geschafft on Christmas Eve 2023. "Soon I'll have made it," it says, "that my mom will be proud". He manifests.

The musician swaps the 808s and distorted synths of his first steps for softer sounds on piano and guitar, light-hearted pop moments arranged with charming rap verses. "My music has become more open," he says. This is also thanks to producer alfons, in whom bac finds a perfect counterpart on the web. They work together exclusively online for six months and create the first exclamation mark with "In der Zeit verlieren": Spotify Viral Charts in the entire DACH region.

They see each other for the first time on a joint songwriting trip to Gran Canaria in spring 2024; they then give their first concerts in Berlin and Zurich - without Samuel ever having attended one himself. Rosaroter Tee goes through the roof, SinglechartsDE #33, Spotify Top50, Cover HotHits Deutschland, Radio Top100, the streaming numbers reach seven figures, as does the number of monthly listeners on Spotify.

At the end of November, bac rounds off this extremely successful year 2024 with the EP Manchmal so, manchmal so. "The common thread is that there is no common thread," he says about his debut. There is no indecision behind this sentence, but rather a clear attitude, vividly embodied by the title track. The 19-year-old allows opposing facets of his emotional range to coexist freely; he doesn't want to have to choose between rap and pop, between good vibes and melancholy. What he likes is not either-or, but: Sometimes like this, sometimes like that.

bac takes you on rollercoaster rides in your head, sometimes inspired by the fresh feeling of being in love (Ach Du Liebe Zeit), sometimes as a devastatingly honest storyteller (Lisa Hahn), sometimes completely reduced to keyboards and the pain in his voice, nothing else (Welten entfernt). Samuel's sensitive feel for seductive melodies meets the nonchalance of a young Cro.

This lightness is simply fun. And one thing is clear: once you hear the hook on Rosaroter Tee, you won't be able to get it out of your head any time soon. Sometimes like this, sometimes like this means: enjoy the moment. "Just do what you feel like doing, when you feel like doing it - and don't think too much," says bac. The newcomer is in no rush, but his music conveys a heart-warming confidence: "I've written songs, I've come a long way with them, I want to go even higher, nobody can get in my way" (In Der Zeit Verlieren). Samuel already has a clear idea of where his path will take him in 2025: Making more music, with more people. And finally attending a concert as an audience member himself.
