FRG 2023, documentary film, 64 min
Director: Khaled Abdulwahed
Language: OmU (Arabic, German with English and German subtitles)
The cleaning of a camera lens initiates a search for clues that leads from the present to the 1950s. Syrian filmmaker Khaled Abdulwahed, who has lived in Germany since 2015, talks to his father Sadallah in Aleppo, who came to the GDR as an exchange student in 1956. The recorded, often interrupted phone calls accompany the editing of two old black-and-white photos that show the father as a young man in Germany. Abdulwahed combines these fragmented memories with current photographs from Leipzig - filling in gaps that are also shaped by his own experience of flight.
This will be followed by an artist talk with the director Khaled Abdulwahed.
