Ballroom is more than just a scene - it's a movement, a family, a home.
Ballroom culture emerged in New York in the 1960s and 70s out of the need to create a space of its own. Black and Latinx trans people in particular, who were marginalized and discriminated against in society and even in other queer spaces, founded this scene. They created a place of resistance, creativity and belonging. Today, Ballroom is a global movement that celebrates identity and empowerment.
This exhibition focuses on the faces of the local Ballroom scene here and now. It creates visibility for the people who shape and develop this culture. Through photographs and personal narratives, a vivid picture of this community emerges - its creativity, its strength and its tireless fight for a self-determined space.
