A high-rise building, one floor. Jamie, Ste and Leah live next door to each other. Jamie sometimes skips school, for Ste it is sometimes too dangerous at home. Leah has been kicked out of school and now annoys everyone with way too loud music, which she needs to find her footing. Jamie and Ste fall in love. Sandra, who is raising Jamie all by herself, tries to keep everything under control, also because she knows that everyone is noticing everything. Tony, her boyfriend, wants to help. And together they talk about queer love, extreme closeness, the search for identity and the difficult but important task of staying with oneself, especially when the desire to belong or to separate oneself is strong.

When Jonathan Harvey wrote Beautiful Thing in 1993, in the aftershocks of the AIDS crisis, LGBTQIA+ stories were shaped by the pain of that time. For Harvey, it was important to counter that with a queer romantic comedy that also told stories of class and care work. For the Parkaue, this play will be newly translated. Director Babett Grube and her team want to open up a space in which an examination of fluid identity, community and what a normative society ascribes to our bodies can take place.
