QUEERHISTORYMONTH
QueerHistoryMonth will take place in Hamburg from May 1 to 31, 2025 (www.queerhistoryhamburg.de). Various events during the festival will bring the history(ies) of the queer community in Hamburg to life. Everyone is welcome - kings, queers, queens, allies, friends, families (of choice) and everyone in between and beyond!
EVENT
New York, Christopher Street, on the night of June 27-28, 1969: homosexuals and trans people in the Stonewall Inn bar resolutely defy the police, who actually want to clear the place. Their uprising and the subsequent riots and demonstrations in the following days are regarded as the big bang of queer self-confidence and a turning point in the fight for recognition and equality, which has been commemorated every year since then at the Christopher Street Day parades.
In their award-winning documentary Before Stonewall, Greta Schiller and Robert Rosenberg tell the story of the lives and everyday life of queer Americans before this event. With rare archive material from film clips and photos, interviews with well-known personalities such as the Beat poet Allen Ginsberg and the poet and activist Audre Lorde, but above all with statements from "normal" gay, lesbian and trans* people from the general population, the film tells the story of the gradual visualization of queer identities in US society.
