Introduction by

Prof. Dr. Christoph Zuschlag

Institute of Art History Bonn

How often has the end of painting been proclaimed in recent decades? Despite this, young contemporary painting is more self-confident, more dynamic and more diverse than ever and astonishingly lively - also because it always knows how to move with the times. One of these protagonists of contemporary painting is Benjamin Burkard. Born in Kandel (Rhineland-Palatinate) in 1986, he shows us that sensational contemporary art is not only created in the major centers of the national art scene, where social fractures can be exemplified, but also away from the media-hyped mainstream in the possibly deceptive idyll of the flat country right on our doorstep.

All the more reason to present Benjamin Burkard's paintings in a first institutional exhibition. Brilliant painting, ingenious compositions, a brilliant sense of color and unusual themes that throw us across the arsenal of classical art history and its contemporary reception combine to create an allegorical image for our present. Benjamin Burkard's paintings are not intended to comfort us, but to sharpen our gaze - a feast for the eye.

Exhibition from 26.11.2024 to 16.02.2025. Christmas break from 23.12.2024 to 02.01.2025
