Bhram

In the organizer's words:
A Performance by Mihir Grover
Choreographer: Mihir Grover
Dramaturgy: Lisa Wolfert
Perfromers: Virendra Nishad, Lourdes Maldonado, Nathalia Gomez
Democracy. A promise of freedom, equality, and justice that is slipping through our fingers. A system meant to serve the people. By the people. For the people. But what if this promise is an illusion - carefully curated, manipulated, and controlled?
"Bhram", meaning "Delusion" in Hindi, is a contemporary dance piece-and an urgent
reckoning with the state of democracy today. A mirror reflecting the unsettling reality of a world where truth is under siege, where power is wielded not for the people but against them. Through movement, we ask: Are we truly free, or are we puppets in a grand spectacle, believing in a system that is already crumbling?
The inspiration for "Bhram" lies in lived experience. Growing up in India, choreographer Mihir Grover once took pride in living in the world's largest democracy. Believed that voices could be heard, that dissent was a right, that truth had a place. But belief is fragile, and reality can be sobering. Artists jailed for satire. Media silenced. The erasure of inconvenient truths, documentaries and news articles. And this erosion is not just an Indian tragedy-it is a global crisis.
From the suppression of protests to the rise of authoritarianism all over the world, democracy is under attack. In a world where populist leaders twist facts and bend laws, where technology fuels misinformation faster than truth can catch up, "Bhram" is a rebellion against apathy. It is an outcry against the forces that silence, deceive, and divide.
In "Bhram", the body becomes the battleground. Dancers move through chaotic, hypnotic patterns, embodying the tension between control and resistance, between reality and illusion.
Through choreography, we aim to strip away the facade, exposing the fractures within democratic systems, led by an undying hope that, through art, truth can still be reclaimed.

A mirror that reflects the disturbing reality of a world where truth is under siege, where power is not exercised for the people but against them. Through movement we ask: are we really free, or are we puppets in a grand spectacle, believing in a system that is already collapsing? The inspiration for BHRAM lies in lived experience. Growing up in India, choreographer Mihir Grover was once proud to live in the world's largest democracy. He believed that voices can be heard, that dissent is a right, that truth has a place. But faith is fragile, and reality can be sobering. Artists are imprisoned for satire. Media are muzzled. The erasure of uncomfortable truths, documentaries and news articles. And this erosion is not just an Indian tragedy - it is a global crisis.
From the suppression of protests to the rise of authoritarianism around the world, democracy is under attack. In a world where populist leaders twist facts and bend laws, where technology spreads misinformation faster than the truth can catch up, BHRAM is a rebellion against apathy. It is an outcry against the forces that silence, deceive and divide. In BHRAM, the body becomes a battlefield.

Through choreography, we aim to dismantle the façade and expose the fractures in democratic systems guided by the hope that truth can still be reclaimed through art.
