Highly expressive

Oskar Gottlieb Blarr's Jesus Passion is one of the most important Passion settings of the 20th century. The composer's unease that "the Jews" are held responsible for the death of Jesus in the Bible was the impetus for the composition. Blarr wanted to tell the story without any underlying anti-Semitism and chose Hebrew as the language. What he achieves musically is overwhelming: he borrows elements from Yemenite and Samaritan liturgy, from prayer melodies of the Syrian church and Sephardic synagogue services. Blarr works with modal, Middle Eastern scales as well as traditional Protestant choral movements. All these elements are combined to create a highly expressive contemporary style that is deeply moving and touching.
